In days gone by, our neighborhoods
were our support system. We knew each
other like family. Now, we come and go
so frequently that sometimes, we don’t
even know our neighbors.
Having a relationship with your neighbors
allows you and your kids to have a bit of a
safety net around you. The“village”around
your home can be an extra set of eyes for you
and yours, while you are the same for them.
The connection can start simply. While you’re
throwing together dinner tonight, have your
little one draw a picture for your neighbor—
maybe of your house and theirs, side-by-side.
Jot down a note, saying“Hi.” Then, leave it on
their door. You can bet it will go on their fridge!
It’s these little steps that get things started. From
there, it could be very casual, or they could
become another“auntie”or grandparent. What
do you have to lose?
Building a community that supports your kids
matters. Whether it’s at church, school or right
next door, there just can’t be too many people in
your“village.”

Eat your way to healthy vision
They say that “you are what you eat” and that applies to your eyes, too. So make sure you’re eating your way to better eye health by filling
your plate with eye-healthy foods. Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E might help ward off age-related
vision problems like macular degeneration and cataracts.
