Maui Nō Ka ‘Oi
Maui is the second largest island in Hawaii, and their
unofficial motto is “Maui Nō Ka ‘Oi”which means Maui is the
best. Visitors to this lovely island are sure to agree.
Oregonians love sunshine and warm beaches, and Maui
provides an abundance of both.
The weather is beautiful year-round with June through
October being the warmest—you can expect highs in the
high 80s and lows in the 70s. November through May, the
highs are in the low 80s and the lows are in the 60s. As with
most destinations, school holidays are the busiest and most
expensive times to travel. The people in Maui love to
celebrate, and there are cultural festivals taking place
throughout the year. Check the gohawaii.com website to
see the scheduled events.
Getting Around
From Eugene you can fly on Alaska Airlines, American
Airlines, Delta Air Lines or United Airlines with one change
of planes to get to Maui. Once in Maui, you will need a rental
car to explore the island. There is only one main road that
services most of the island so be aware of rush-hour times
when people go to and from work.
EATING AND DRINKING
Food and beverages are a big deal in Maui. There are many
different types of culinary experiences you can have around
the island. “Farm to table” is taken seriously here since they
grow a great variety of food as well as produce wine, beer,
vodka, gin and rum. You can visit a farmers’market, tour a
distillery, winery or brewery, track down the best food
trucks, visit local farms and search out hidden gems all
around the island. There are guided culinary tours that
foodies will love.
ACTIVITIES
Active visitors will be very happy in Maui since you can
explore the land and the sea. Biking down Haleakala after
watching the sunrise is an “only in Maui” experience. There
are a number of zip lines on the island that let you enjoy the
beauty of nature while screaming through the treetops.
There are many areas of Maui that are difficult or impossible
to drive to, but you can see some of this natural beauty on a
helicopter tour. The ocean is always a focus in Maui, and you
can get out on the water via kayak, surfboard, stand-up
paddleboards, catamarans and snorkel tours. It is easy to
rent equipment or schedule a tour from any major hotel
or resort.
WHERE TO STAY
Maui has a great variety of hotels, resorts and condos to suit
every need. Many families like to have the convenience of a
kitchen and the space found in a condominium, although
you need to be aware that many condos are across the
street from the beach or on rocky cliffs. Luxury Resorts are
found in the Wailea, Kaanapali and Kapalua areas. One of my
favorite places to send clients combines the best features of
a condo, with full kitchens and lots of room, with the
services of a resort hotel with extensive pools, a spa and a
great restaurant right on the beach. I was so happy to finally
get to stay at the Honua Kai Resort & Spa on a recent girls’
getaway, and it was perfect. I know that couples and families
would find everything they need for a great vacation.
